Mini-Buses to Enhance Last-Mile Connectivity in Chennai Suburbs

Chennai’s outskirts will soon see improved last-mile connectivity as mini-buses are set to operate across 72 routes. The Chennai district administration has invited mini-bus operators following a government order under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The service, scheduled to roll out on May 1, will cover extended areas like Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur, covering 240 sq. km. Mini-buses will have a capacity of 7 to 25 passengers, with fares ranging from ₹4 to ₹10.
While core areas like Tondiarpet, Royapuram, and Anna Nagar are excluded, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on expensive autorickshaws and boost public transport accessibility.
