The heat has increased in the city and we are at the threshold of summer. It is important to be hydrated at all times. Bring hydrated does not necessarily mean that you drink water when you are thirsty. You must keep sipping on water throughout the day. One of the main effects of dehydration is fatigue.

According to a leading health consultant, When the body loses more water than it should, dehydration sets in. staying outdoors for long periods of time without drinking enough water is a recipe for disaster. People should drink plenty of water and apply cold compresses if they suffer from sunburn. Even diarrhoea and food poisoning cause dehydration because of excessive loss of electrolytes. Keep sipping on oral rehydration solution (ORS) to supplement the loss of electrolytes.

Here are some symptoms to look out for if you or someone you know is dehydrated:
  • Feeling dizzy or weak
  • An urgent need to drink water
  • Dry mouth and palpitations
  • Lethargy
  • Fainting spells
Most dehydration cases can be treated at home. However, if the symptoms are severe rush to your doctor immediately. The first thing to do is to make sure that the dehydrated person gets enough fluids. Sip on water that contains electrolytes. Suck on ice cubes - this has been known to work on some people. Stay indoors. Allow your skin to breathe by wearing loose cotton clothes. Keep the body cool by using a wet towel on the face, arms and torso. You may also spray water over the body. Eat fruits that are high in water content.

How to prevent dehydration? A leading nutritionist says, Thirst is the last indicator of dehydration. Hence, consume water or fluids throughout the day and include cold beverages like lime water, coconut water, iced tea, cold coffee, buttermilk, whey protein shakes, cold soups, cold salads and low fat curd. Eat a good amount of fruits like melons and citrus fruits to maintain hydration.

While stepping outdoors, carry water with you. Excessive alcohol intake also results in loss of water and dehydration.
