CMRL Update: T Nagar to Benefit as Metro Operations Progress in Phase II
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced exciting developments in Phase II of its Metro Rail project, bringing relief and joy to the residents of T Nagar. The underground Metro Rail operations in Corridor 4, connecting Kodambakkam Power House Metro to Panagal Park Metro, are set to begin by March 2027.
Phase II Progress
The operation of Corridor 4 will be rolled out in stages:
1. Elevated Line Operations: The elevated stretch from Poonamallee Depot to Porur Junction is expected to commence by the end of 2025.
2. Porur to Kodambakkam Power House: Following this, services will extend from Porur to Kodambakkam Power House, linking elevated and underground sections seamlessly.
3. Underground Stations: From Kodambakkam Power House to Lighthouse, stations will operate underground, featuring advanced infrastructure.
Construction Highlights
- The elevated stations from Poonamallee Depot to Kodambakkam Power House Metro are being built by L&T, while the underground stations from Kodambakkam to Lighthouse are constructed by ITD Cementation India.
- Panagal Park Station, a key underground hub, spans 319 metres and features crossovers for driverless trains to switch tracks at Panagal Park and Lighthouse. This allows for more flexible operations.
Timeline and Testing
CMRL officials are optimistic about the timelines, with the elevated line`s construction progressing rapidly. Testing on the Poonamallee Depot to Porur Junction stretch is likely to begin in the coming months.
