Chennai Corporation to Beautify Spaces Under Flyovers
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated beautification projects under five flyovers, including Doveton, Kalaivanar, Peters Road - Conronsmith Road, Rangarajapuram, and Vyasarpadi. The plans include landscaping, solar-powered lighting, CCTV surveillance, pedestrian pathways, ornamental plants, benches, and play areas.
The project budgets include ₹3.74 crore for Kalaivanar flyover, ₹3.25 crore for Doveton flyover, and ₹2.53 crore for Rangarajapuram ROB, with completion expected within a year.
Key features include green beds (1.5 to 3 meters wide), vertical gardens with automated irrigation, concrete pathways (2-3 meters wide), and drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
Meanwhile, existing vertical gardens under bridges like Murasoli Maran and Kotturpuram remain neglected due to a lack of funds and maintenance contracts. Experts suggest using heat-resistant plants or alternatives like bamboo and lemongrass for sustainability.
