A major technical glitch on Saturday morning disrupted Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services across India, affecting popular platforms like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay. Over 1,100 complaints were logged on DownDetector by noon, impacting both individual and business transactions.
The outage also hit major banks including HDFC, SBI, and Kotak Mahindra. NPCI acknowledged the issue on social media, citing "intermittent technical issues" and assured users that resolution efforts were underway.
This incident follows a similar outage on March 26 and comes shortly after NPCI`s April 8 announcement tightening international UPI QR code usage. While the changes aim to enhance security, the repeated disruptions raise concerns about the resilience of India’s digital payment infrastructure.
With UPI serving as a crucial part of daily financial operations, the outage highlights the urgent need for stronger safeguards and infrastructure improvements across the sector.
