Inauguration of Chennai New Airport

Plans are on to officially open Chennai’s Meenambakkam International Airport (currently Anna International). Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Selvi J. Jayalalitha, had proposed to name the airport after the late Dr. MGR.
Slated to open in 2010, the opening has increased due to an increase in the budget, which, in turn, is the result of rise in cost of materials and land acquisition. The project which was worth Rs. 1,800 crores is now worth Rs. 2,300 crores and has been going on since 2008.
The new and improved airport will now open on January 28th and will be inaugurated by Vice President, Mr. Hamid Ansari.
